Looking at the ranking of all 10 teams based on playoff probability for IPL 2023, Gujarat Titans are expected to be on the first position.
IPL 2023 is currently in its third week and the teams are slowly catching on, getting their playing 11s and team compositions right. Even though we have seen only 3-4 games per team so far, we don’t have a single unbeaten team so far.
This is great news for fans as all the teams have almost equal strengths and weaknesses barring a few hiccups. To overcome the weakness, the impact player rule allowed teams to have a strong 13-player combination for each match, with a few more substitutes to be used when necessary.
After seeing the best 15-16 player combinations of each team in the first 3-4 games of IPL 2023, how about analyzing each team according to their team combinations and ranking the 10 teams according to their playoff chances? It may not be perfect, but it is definitely a useful and unbiased analysis to get top 4 results.
We will find the cumulative ratings of top 15 players to know the ranking of 10 teams based on IPL 2023 playoff chances. Players are rated according to last three IPL and domestic/international form. Related Ratings, Openers, Accelerators, Spinners etc. Calculated according to benchmark players in respective categories.
More importantly, 15 players will be selected with their best first picks, keeping in mind 11 players and an additional 4 substitutes. Four players may have more than one combination depending on team composition. But generally they need at least 3 spinners, at least 5 pacers, at least 2 goalkeepers and a total of 5 foreign players in their roster. This way we will be able to select a combination of top 15 players for each team.
Well, let’s see the ranking of all 10 teams for IPL 2023 by their playoff chances.
First choice playing XI for MI: Ishan Kishan [wk], Rohit Sharma [c], Cameron Green, Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Verma, Tim David, Jofra Archer, Piyush Chawla, Kumar Karthikeya, Jason Behrendorf and Mohd. Arshad Khan. Additional Subs: Riley Meredith, Hrithik Shokeen, Vishnu Vinod [Weekly] and Nehal Wadhera
At number 10 are Bombay Indians, and if it wasn’t for analysis, the scoreboard would have described their performance. The team is full of youngsters with 6 players in the 15 member squad. Moreover, Mumbai Indians’ bowling is their weak point and it will be difficult for MI to defend matches if they don’t chase it.
First choice playing XI for KKR: Rahmanullah Gurbaz [wk], Venkatesh Iyer, Nitish Rana [c], Rinku Singh, N Jagadeesan, Andre Russell, Sunil Narine, Shardul Thakur, Lucky Ferguson, Umesh Yadav and Varun Chakraborty. Additional Subs: Tim Southee, Suyash Sharma, Mandeep Singh and Anukul Roy
Like MI, Kolkata Knight Riders are loaded with youth, including their captain Nitish Rana. Andre Russell remains their best player, but the Impact won’t bowl due to the player’s rule and come up with 6 runs or less. Although KKR won both games thanks to some incredible heroics, they were far from competent compared to other teams. However, they have a strong bowling squad to survive the tournament.
First Pick 11 Playing for DC: David Warner [c], Prithvi Shah, Mitchell Marsh, Abhishek Porel [wk], Rovman Powell, Akshar Patel, Lalit Yadav, Kuldeep Yadav, Mukesh Kumar, Unrich Nortje and Khalil Ahmed. Additional Subs: Mustafizur Rahman, Manish Pandey, Chetan Sakaria & Yash Dhul
Number 8 sees Delhi Capitals and the leaderboard reflects their performance. Rishabh Pant’s vacancy is huge for Delhi to fill all three categories including captaincy. Despite Delhi’s respectable salutations, Prithvi Shah and midrange misfiring will be a concern for them.
First Pick 11 for PBKS: Shikhar Dhawan [c], Prabsimran Singh, Bhanuka Rajapaksa, Liam Livingstone, Jitesh Sharma [wk], Shah Rukh Khan, Rishi Dhawan, Sam Curran, Kagiso Rabada, Rahul Chahar & Arshdeep Singh. Additional Subs: Sikandar Raza, Harpreet Brar, Atharva Thaide and Mohit Rathi
At number 7 is Punjab Kings, which has a strong roster but has lost two places. The team isn’t very strong in the middle and their backups aren’t that strong either. Still, their score of 8,036 isn’t bad and it’s just getting a few games right. The return of Kagiso Rababda and Liam Livingstone should boost the team’s confidence in the upcoming matches.
First choice for CSK: Devon Conway, Ruthuraj Gaikwad, Moeen Ali, Ambati Rayudu, Ben Stokes, Ravindra Jadeja, MS Dhoni [c&wk], Shivam Dubey, Deepak Chahar, M Thiksha and Tushar Deshpande. Additional Subs: Ajinkya Rahane, Rajvardhan Hangargekar, Subhrashu Senapathy and Dwayne Pretorius
It might surprise you to see Chennai Super Kings at 6, but honestly the pace of bowling has been a major disappointment for CSK. Deepak Chahar is their top bowler and is currently ruled out due to injury. Inexperienced pacers like Tushar, Hungergakar and Magala are being heavily relied upon. Unless CSK succeeds with their spinners at home, it will be difficult for them to make it to the playoffs.
First choice for SRH: Harry Brook, Mayank Agarwal, Rahul Tripathi, Aiden Markram [c], Heinrich Klaasen [wk], Abdul Samad, Washington Sundar, Marco Janssen, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, T Natarajan and Umran Malik. Additional Subs: Abhishek Sharma, Glenn Phillips [wk], Mayank Markande & Karthik Tyagi
Number 5 sees Sunrisers Hyderabad and they have a good list including reserves. In fact, they are one of the two teams that have good alternatives with GT. However, we said we missed out on the IPL experience. All foreign players have played only a few IPL seasons. Therefore, even if they have the ability, it takes enough confidence to overcome the team.
First choice playing XI for LSG: KL Rahul [c], Quinton de Kock [wk], Deepak Hooda, Ayush Badoni, Nicholas Pooran, Marcus Stoinis, Krunal Pandya, Ravi Bishnoi, Mark Wood, Amit Mishra & Avesh Khan. Additional Subs: Mohsin Khan, Krishnappa Gautam, Kyle Meyers & Manan Vohra
Lucknow Supergiants have a strong XI and the presence of impact players makes it stronger. LSG has all the skills to finish in the top 4. Their batting and bowling have outstanding firepower. KL will be the team to beat in the tournament if Rahul returns to form and Mohsin recovers quickly from his injury.
First choice for RR: Jos Buttler, Yashaswi Jaiswal, Sanju Samson [c&wk], Devdutt Padikkal, Shimran Hetmyer, Ryan Parag, Jason Holder, Ravichandran Ashwin, Trent Boult, Kuldeep Sen and Yuzvendra Chahal. Additional Subs: Obed McCoy, Murugan Ashwin, Sandeep Sharma and Dhruv Jurel
Number 3 sees Rajasthan Royals and they are the only team to have a consistent first pick playing 11. We never see them change their 11 games. With the form of Jos Buttler and Yuzvendra Chahal, we expect them to be in the top 4 again.
First choice XI for RCB: Faf du Plessis [c], Virat Kohli, Glenn Maxwell, Mahipal Lomror, Dinesh Karthik [wk], Shahbaz Ahmed, Harshal Patel, Vanindu Hazranga, Josh Hazlewood, Mohammad Siraj and Karn Sharma. Additional Subs: Michael Bracewell, Akash Deep, Anuj Rawat & Suyash Prabhudesai
Number 2 is Royal Challengers Bangalore and that’s no surprise. They had one of the strongest 11 on paper and even though RCB lost 2 games, they fought well till the end. With the return of Josh Hazlewood and Vanindu Hassan, we expect RCB to come back stronger in the upcoming matches.
First choice playing 11 for GT: Shubham Gill, Wriddhiman Saha [wk], B Sai Sudarshan, Hardik Pandya [c], David Miller, Rahul Tewatia, Rashid Khan, Alzari Joseph, Mohammed Shami, Joshua Little and Yash Dayal. Additional Subs: Mathew Wade, R Sai Kishore, Vijay Shankar & Shivam Blue
Finally, the best team on paper in all categories is Gujarat Titans. Gujarat may not have the best squad but they are playing 11 men including 4 strong backups. What makes GT unique is that almost every match has a new match winner. Under the talented leadership of Hardik Pandya and Ashish Nehra, GT will hope to finish in the top 2 again.
This is the playoff opportunity for all 10 teams in IPL 2023. RCB, GT, LSG and RR look like the best teams to enter the playoffs. But don’t underestimate the power of CSK and the element of surprise in SRH’s form. Individually, GT, LSG, RCB and CSK are the top teams to qualify for the IPL 2023 playoffs.
